I'm Corey Chambers. Thank you for reading my blog about success on eBay. In that definition, I am not successful yet. I still feel that I need to work. This guide will help you with your photography, description and terms for your eBay listing so that you will get the most money for your used guitar and have a smooth, quick sale.

SELLING GUITARS ON EBAY

Guitars are some of the best items to sell on eBay because they are very popular, valuable and relatively easy to ship.

Photography: Clean your guitar with a 50/50 solution of alcohol/water. As with all items, use a bright, color-corrected light, along with at least a 2 megapixel digital camera. Shoot the front of the guitar diagonally so that the guitar shows up nice and big in the eBay thumbnail. To keep the photo sharp, hold the camera very still or use a tripod. For glossy guitars, tilt the guitar or move the camera so that there is not too much glare or reflection on the guitar. Otherwise shoot the guitar straight on so that you do not distort the guitar shape in the photo. Shoot the entire front, entire back, body, head, back of body, back of head, close ups of any important features, accessories, including case.

Description: First, research your guitar by finding similar guitars on eBay. e.g. search for Gretsch Duo Jet. On the results page, click "Completed listings" on the left side, then sort by highest price first. Look at the highest priced sold items (they will be green). Model your listing after the best ones. Then find it on Google to collect more information about your model.

Try to use all 55 letters in your eBay listing title (these words bring in 80% of your bidders). Use Google keyword tool to help find the most relavant words. Example: 2005 GRETSCH 6128T-57 DUO JET ELECTRIC GUITAR BIGSBY

Your description should include the following:

Year/age, brand, model name, model #, serial #, general condition, working condition, color. Describe what is unique or superior about your guitar. Include guitar type (acoustic, electric or acoustic-electric), body type (hollow, solid, chambered), body style (single cutaway, double cutaway or no cutaway), wood type and finish, inlay materials, any special information about the fretboard or pickups, strings, defects, and accessories. Also include: guitar weight, weight of guitar with case, dimensions of guitar (length, width and thickness), dimensions of case. Don't forget to specifiy all of the defects!

eBay Options and Terms: Offer to ship worldwide. More than 20% of guitar buyers are outside of the United States. Europeans buy a large percentage of the most expensive guitars. The best time to start an auction is Sunday through Thursday at about 7:00 PM Pacific (10:00 PM Eastern), but earlier in the day is OK. Avoid late Friday or late Saturday (mornings are OK). All day Sunday is good, especially early Sunday evenings! Starting price: Start at one cent if possible because that will attract more bidders and a higher final sale amount. Only use a reserve if you absolutely cannot risk selling for too low, or if you are not sure how good your listing is. Use a reserve if you require a minimum for your item or if you are afraid you might make a major mistake in your listing. Your guitar will sell for more money if you offer a satisfaction guarantee.

Shipping: Add just a bit of bubble wrap to fill in any gaps between the guitar and inside of case. Wrap the outside in 1-3 layers of foam wrap or bubble wrap. Use a guitar box (usually 50 x 20 x 8 inches, available from uline.com). Fold and tape the bottom flaps. Put about 2 inches of foam peanuts in the bottom of the box, add the wrapped case with guitar inside, then fill the remainder with foam peanuts. Jiggle and shake the box several time while filling with peanutes. Overfill it just slightly so that there is just bit of push-back when you fold the top flaps down. Ship domestic boxes using Fedex. Ship international boxes with USPS Priority. Buy insurance for guitars that you cannot afford to refund when it occassionally breaks during shipping.

I had a feeling that the down economy would end up being good for my consignment business on eBay. This month turned out to more than prove that correct. I picked up two 26-ft truckloads full of office furniture, equipment, motorhome parts and accessories from giant Saddleback RV, which closed its doors in December 2008. The more than 300 items included desks, tools, RV parts -- even the phone system and computer room equipment -- filled up my big 1,600 square foot Registered eBay Drop Off Location main warehouse in Santa Ana. I had to put nearly half of it in a storage until until I have time to photograph and list it all on eBay.

At the same time, another business (an upscale spa in Fashion Island, Newport Beach, CA) was downsizing its hydrotherapy equipment (although expanding its cosmetic surgery services). I was asked to sell their used, giant hydrotherapy tub steam capsule on eBay for them, then remove it from the spa and get it to the new buyer. The huge capsule was about 7 feet long, more than 4 feet wide, nearly 5 feet tall and weighed about 400 lbs. I have never moved something so large, but I wanted to try. When selling large, complex items worth over $1,000.00, I now include a free listing on Craigslist, plus I contact experts in the industry to inform them of the item for sale so that they can refer interested parties to bid on the auction. With all that marketing, the capsule sold with no problem. Then the problem was how to move the 400 lb machine, lifting it above 4 inches of plumbing on the floor, out of the spa, and down five steps into a truck.

I purchased a pallet jack, got a wood pallet, bought an additional hand truck and some 12-foot wood planks to go down the five steps. I hired four day laborers from the nearby Home Depot (two of which I had worked with before -- and they did great work (you need to tell them to take their time so as not to damage anything). We used the two hand trucks to lift the capsule above the 4-inch plumbing on the floor, slide the wood pallet under the tub, move it out with the pallet jack, then down the wood planks and into the truck with a lift gate. I drove the capsule very slowly to the crate company, which constructed a humongous 8-foot crate.

The hydrotherapy capsule is now on its merry way to its new home, a spa in Brighton, Massachusetts. I'm looking forward to selling more large challenging items on eBay.
